Vessel Safety For 2014 Alaska Halibut & Block Cod Fishery

February 24, 2014

In order to improve overall vessel safety for the 2014 Alaska halibut and black cod IFQ fisheries, the Coast Guard encourages all mariners to participate in their free commercial fishing vessel safety examination. As noted by Lt. Erin Cridland, the Alaska Coast Guard district’s inspection and investigation officer, assuring that fishing vessels meet the “minimum required standards of safety”, and by assuring “the appropriate lifesaving, firefighting, navigation and signaling gear” are on fishing vessels prior to the start of the season, “greatly reduces the chance of vessel loss and increases the odds of survival should the crew need to abandon ship.”
